Steps to a Successful E-Mail Marketing Campaign

September 20, 2012

E-mail marketing is an efficient, low-cost way for businesses to keep in touch with customers. By developing a great campaign, you can gain brand recognition, improve conversion rates, grow the return on your marketing investments and attract new customers. In order to be successful with e-mail marketing, you must develop a well thought out marketing strategy that can be tested, tracked and tweaked for maximum impact and return.

The following is a list of 5 basic tips that will help your e-mail marketing campaign to succeed:

1.       Clear Call to Action

When a customer or potential customer opens your e-mail, you have a moment to capture their attention. It’s important to make sure your e-mail loads quickly, is creative and tells the recipient clearly what they’re supposed to do next. A good way to do this is to include links, and use content to compel the recipient to click through.

2.       Keep Content Short and Sweet

Most recipients will not read all of the content you pack into your e-mail messages, but rather scan it for things they may find interesting. It’s helpful to keep your paragraphs concise, and use bullet points, bold fonts and different colors to highlight specific words or phrases that you know will peak the interest of your customers.

3.       Do Not Depend on Images

Due to the rise in mobile devices and improved email security, many recipients will not see the images in your e-mails. Be sure never to rely solely on images to convey you message. Never put a call to action such as “click here” in an image. Instead of depending heavily on use of images, use engaging, easy to read text content.

4.       Use Alt Text, Title Text and Linking with Images

If you do decide to use an image every now and then in your e-mails, some of your recipients may be viewing a bunch of white space as listed in the tip above. To avoid this, create alt and title text for all images because different browsers will read these two types of text differently. Also make sure that your images are linked. By doing this, those customers who can’t view your images will at least have the opportunity to click to your landing page or website.

5.       Always Test E-Mails

Sending e-mails to test accounts on each of the big e-mail providers will allow you to make any necessary changes before sending it to your customer list. You can catch errors in your content such as broken links or language that sends you straight to the spam box.

Taking the above tips into consideration when starting an e-mail marketing program will set you on the path to success. While an e-mail marketing campaign may seem like a simple enough task, there are many factors that come into play that can complicate the process.
